Issue 8 of Wunderdog Magazine sees the launch of the Dog Manifesto. As we ease into the 2024 election year, Wunderdog has pooled together dog experts and campaigners to formulate 14 legislative changes we want to see. It boils down to one demand: Good People for Good Dogs.
With international perspectives from Germany to Canada, Italy to Thailand, the Dog Manifesto will serve dog lovers everywhere who are interested in advocating for dog welfare.
But it’s not just policy. Our cover star Santos is an older podenco leaning in to his rescuer Steve Allen of Hope for Podencos. He was photographed by An Di Prima, who recently completed a book on rescued podencos to advocate for a breed sometimes called ‘the great forgotten’. Her evocative images will make you want to adopt a podenco immediately.
Wunderdog spends time with Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2020 Curtis Holder and his beautiful whippet, Freddie. When Curtis draws Freddie, he really draws himself, and we chat about how his dog helped Curtis transition to becoming a full-time artist.
Photographer Sophie Gamand reports from Moldova, where she documented the work by NGO Four Paws. Wunderdog also visits dogs freed by Beagle Freedom Project UK as they take their first steps to freedom. Canadian lawyer and activist She Kay-Johnson dives into the delicate balancing act of helping dogs on First Nation reservations, while Asha Leo tells about advocating for pit bulls and how her own pittie, Pirate, helps her overcome sexual assault trauma. Asha & Pirate really are LA’s cutest couple.
And if you just fancy some fun with your dog, follow dog rescuer Laura Walker around her favourite trails in north Devon, check out the dog-friendly beaches around Porto and Portugal’s north, and get more playtime inspiration from our resident dog trainer, Luke Balsam.
There is even more – this really is a bumper issue!
